INSCRIBED BY MENTOR ALFRED STIEGLITZ
(MARIN, JOHN.) Benson, E. M. John Marin. The Man and His Work. 51 reproductions, including 2 in color. 8vo, linen lettered in deep blue; original dust jacket and glassine, small chip at lower front tip of jacket, other tips rubbed, otherwise unusually crisp. Freitag 6062. Washington: American Federation of Arts, 1935
- Notes: first edition of the first monograph on Marin. inscribed and signed by alfred stieglitz in year of publication to Helen Walcott Younger: "Sensitive souls are none too plentiful these days. -- She seems a sensitive soul. And I move towards such. -- Alfred Stieglitz. An American Place / December 17 - 1935." A wonderful association copy. Stieglitz "discoverd" Marin and exhibited him extensively at his gallery, An American Place. Marin was one of his three "core" artists among the famous "Seven Americans" group which also included O'Keeffe, Hartley, Dove, Strand, Demuth, and Stieglitz himself. Under his guidance, the gallery nurtured the artists, allowing them to create their most refined and mature work, thereby defining a major movement in 20th Century American Art.
