On October 21, 1929--the 50th anniversary of Edison's incandescent light bulb--a celebration was held at the old Thomas Edison Institute in Dearborn, MI. In addition to commemorating the golden jubilee of the electric light, the celebration served as the dedication ceremony of Henry Ford's Greenfield Village, which would occupy some of the same buildings as Edison's former Institute. Several celebrities attended the celebration, including those who signed the postcard in the present lot. A week after signing, the stock market crash on Black Tuesday dampened the jovial atmosphere of technological achievement, setting in motion what became the Great Depression.
