  • Condition: This exceptionally lush and dimensional Irving Penn print is in excellent condition. The platinum-palladium print evidences the rich texture, tone, and contrast characteristic of Penn's work. Detailed and velvety, the print exemplifies both Penn's elegant printing practices and his groundbreaking imagery. The tones are precise and consistent throughout.

Upon exceedingly close inspection, there are three minuscule light tan specs within the white block at the left. Of these, two are nearly imperceptible and the third is faint and unobtrusive. They are not at all visually disruptive. Otherwise, the surface of the print is bright, clean, lush, and neat.

Penn's delicate coating and recoating of the surface with multiple layers of palladium and platinum accounts for the unique or one-of-a-kind status of each photographic print. The light-sensitive agents are embedded in the paper's fibers and, overall, the effect is stunning.

To help withstand multiple coatings, exposures, and dryings, and to prevent warping, Penn affixed the paper to an aluminum support. Penn devised a system of precise registration punches to ensure the paper and negatives would remain perfectly aligned through the multi-step process.
