IRVING PENN (1917-2009) Clown Playing Solitaire (Emmett Kelly).

IRVING PENN (1917-2009)
Clown Playing Solitaire (Emmett Kelly). Silver print, the image measuring 7 5/8x9 1/8 inches (19.4x23.2 cm.), the mount 15x11 inches (38.1x27.9 cm.), with Penn's signature, inscription, and date in ink on mount recto, and his copyright stamp on mount verso. 1947

Provenance: Sotheby's New York, October 2, 1996, lot 363; to the Present Owner

  • Condition: Penn's vintage photograph of a Clown playing solitaire is in good to very good condition. The print is rich and displays exquisite range of soft mid-tones, as typical of bromoil silver prints.

Under close examination, we can notice a small area of discoloration (warmer tone) in the left background as visible on our online catalogue, as well as a mark of slight discoloration below the shoes. This last one is hardly perceptible. Under strong raking light, the surface of the print evidences a few very faint surface impressions, which are prior to the mounting. The most visible one, once again only visible under raking light and not under normal viewing condition, is a small half-moon mark in the background in the upper edge margin. These little inconsistencies do not disturb nor impact the visual graphic qualities of the image.

The print has no margins, and its edges are neat.

The mount both recto and verso shows signs of soiling and pencil smudges with no other issues.

With the dedication "For Francine, Christmas 1947, from Penn" in brown ink on mount recto.
