IRVING PENN (1917-2009) Portrait of the photographer Cecil Beaton, New York. 1946.

IRVING PENN (1917-2009)
Portrait of the photographer Cecil Beaton, New York. 1946.
Silver print, the image measuring 7 5/8x9½ inches (19.4x24.1 cm.), the sheet slightly larger, with Penn's credit and copyright stamps on verso.

Provenance
Houk Gallery, Chicago; to the Collection of Dr. James and Debra Pearl

  • Condition: Irving Penn's Portrait of the photographer Cecil Beaton is overall in very good condition. The print is lush and rich, with sharp contrasts, deep black tones, and fine details.

The surface of the print evidences a few very faint superficial inconsistencies, which are mostly visible under close examination in strong raking light and noted below for the purpose of a detailed report. They include: a cluster of minuscule pinpoint-size impressions in the background (between the arm and the camera), a few tiny specs of residue, one on the sitter (under the elbow of the left arm), and in the background (behind the sitter), as well as a small area of professional retouching in the background (between the naked figure and the extreme right edge).

All these superficial imperfections should be considered minor, as they are not at all apparent when viewing the print under typical conditions and are not distracting at all.

The verso is clean, with Penn's credit and copyright stamps on verso. 1946

Also, the print has no margins, and upon extremely close inspection, minuscule and superficial chips may be found at the extreme edges of the work, and more specifically at the tip of the corners, but even here it is quite unobtrusive and minor.

An unusual, yet delightful artist's portrait by Penn.

Provenance: Houk Gallery, Chicago; to the Collection of Dr. James and Debra Pearl
