Early book edition, octavo; half-title present; with fifty-three illustrations by Boughton (1833-1905) in black-and-white; no. 39 of 100 copies bound in green leather by Exeter Bookbinders, lettered in gilt, the front panel decorated with a prosthetic blue glass eye edged in green leather, all edges gilt (scattered stains and spotting); 7 1/8 x 4 5/8 in.

Washington Irving's two most famous short stories were originally published in the collection, The Sketchbook of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent., in 1820. Today, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Rip Van Winkle are important cornerstones of North America's collective cultural consciousness. The Sketchbook also impressed readers and important literary figures overseas. Early admirers included Sir Walter Scott and Lord Byron, as well as Henry Wordsworth Longfellow, whose interest in literature was sparked by Irving's masterful writing.
