ISAAC DE JOUDERVILLE (after Rembrandt) Cupid Resting

ISAAC DE JOUDERVILLE (after Rembrandt)
Cupid Resting.

Etching, 1640s. 88x119 mm; 3 1/2x4 3/4 inches, narrow margins. Ex-collection Maximilian Fürst von Waldburg zu Wolfegg und Waldsee (Lugt 2542, verso). A superb, richly-inked impression of this extremely scarce etching.

We have not found another impression at auction in the past 30 years.

Originally identified as a work of Rembrandt by Bartsch and other early cataloguers, that attribution has since been rejected (the current impression is signed "Jouderville" in the plate lower right). White and Boon note that this etching reproduces a painting signed "Rembrandt f 1634" in the Museum Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid. The Rijksmuseum's, Amsterdam, impression of this etching is dated 1648 in ink.

Jouderville (1612-1645) was an orphan whose parents had come from Metz. He became an apprentice of Rembrandt in November 1629 and traveled with him to Amsterdam in 1631. He painted mainly Rembrandtesque portraits and historical allegories. His paintings were so faithful to Rembrandt's style that, following his early death and later, many of his works were erroneously attributed to Rembrandt, a trend which continued over to this particular etching as well. Bartsch 132 (as Rembrandt); Nowell-Usticke 132.
