ITALIAN SCHOOL, 16TH-CENTURY Portrait of Antonio Salamanca. Engraving 1560. 193x132 mm; 7.625 x 5.25in Ex-collection Karl Ewald Hasse ( Lugt 860, verso) and Comte Josef von Enzenberg (Lugt 845, verso). Trimmed on or just inside the plate mark. A very good impression of this scarce print. In a recent article on Salamanca, Valeria Pagani attributes the portrait to Enea Vico or a follower, whereas formerly (Bartsch and others) the portrait was believed to be by Nicolas Beatrizet (see Valeria Pagani, "Documents on Antonio Salamanca," The Print Quarterly, Volume XVII, Number 2, 2000, pp. 148-55). Whomever the artist, Salamanca is probably represented around the time that he gained Roman citizenship (1560), thus the use of the allegory of Rome in the upper center (copied in reverse from an engraving by Vico). Salamanca was, along with his business partner Antonio Lafreri, the most important print publisher in Rome during the mid 1500s. Bartsch 243,6 (as Beatrizet).
