IVAN SHAGIN (1904-1982) Attack.

IVAN SHAGIN (1904-1982)
Attack. Silver print, the image measuring 11 7/8x19¼ inches (30.2x48.9 cm.), with the title (in Cyrillic) in ink, and a Society for Cultural Relations with Foreign Countries (Moscow) label with Shagin's typed credit and title with a label from The American Russian Institute (Philadelphia) and a Pittsburgh Salon of Photographic Art label dated 1943, on verso. Circa 1943

Provenance: The Estate of Richard T. Rosenthal, Philadelphia

  • Condition: This rare vintage photograph by Shagin is overall in good to very good condition. The print is atmospheric with a rich tonal variety.

Under close examination in strong raking light, the surface of the print evidences faint scattered surface inconsistences, which are primarily confined to the extreme edges of the image and only visible when viewing the print under careful, strongly-lit viewing conditions.

These include: very faint horizontal lines that seem to follow the planes' trajectories. Not visible under normal viewing conditions; two short faint creases with no emulsion loss in the upper edge and upper right quadrant - These are hardly noticeable-, and a short hard crease in the upper left edge. It is visible but not disruptive at all when viewing the image.

There are no margins on the print, the two bottom corners are slightly rubbed, there are two tiny creases with emulsion loss at the very bottom, and a few small and scattered chips may be found at the extreme edges, as well as some silvering in the darkest areas. This is minor, and not obtrusive to the image.

The verso shows traces of period glue and remnants of a previous mounting around the edges, which results in a narrow band of warming at the extreme edges of the image area on recto.

Once again, most of the inconsistencies are not visible under normal viewing condition and are obscured by the graphic qualities of the print.
