J. ALLEN ST. JOHN HAND IT TO 'EM. Circa 1917.
35 1/4x24 3/4 inches.
Condition B+: expertly restored losses and creases in bottom margin.
Close enough to the front lines to see the barbed wire, and to have to wear a helmet, this Salvation Army volunteer is carrying a tray of steaming coffee, pie and muffins to "the boys in the trenches." In an unusal artistic flourish for a war poster, the steam from the coffee forms a decorative swirl. Although fewer than 500 members of the Salvation Army went over to Europe during the war, their relief efforts gained them a reputation of a force ten times that size. Not in Rawls, not in Theofiles.
