J. J. GOULD, JR. (1880-1935) LIPPINCOTT'S DECEMBER. 1895.
13 3/4x9 inches.
Condition B+: time stain in margin; repaired tear along horizontal fold; repaired tears in margins.
When Carqueville moved to Paris to continue his art education, J. J. Gould, a student from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and a Philadelphia native, took over as the designer of the publisher's monthly posters. Many contemporary critics derided his work as derivative of Penfield's, using such unflattering phrases as "ordinary" and "absent of vigor." However, Kiehl accurately interprets his work, "His compositions lacked the static frontal quality of Penfield's figures, implied greater movement through diagonal composition, and relied on planes of non primary color" (Kiehl p. 187). Kiehl 79, DFP 243.
