J. MONDAN (DATES UNKNOWN). CORSET LE FURET. 54x38 inches, 138x98 cm. Herold & Cie., Paris.

J. MONDAN (DATES UNKNOWN) CORSET LE FURET.
54 1/2x38 1/2 inches, 138 1/2x98 cm. Herold & Cie., Paris.
Condition A-: unobtrusive vertical and horizontal folds; minor restoration in image.
A feature in the wardrobe of all proper fin-de-siecle ladies, the corset provided an entire generation of well-dressed women incredibly slim waists, protruding breasts and prominent derrieres. The corset remained a fashion staple until the years before the First World War, when Paul Poiret redesigned both fashion and the prevailing sensibilities and freed women from the restrictive device. Le Furet ("Ferret," so named because of the animal's slim physique), was a major brand of corset, commissioned many posters by prominent graphic designers. Manuel Robbe, Gaston Noury, Leonetto Cappiello and Roger Perot all designed posters for the company. Other artists were also hired to advertise the company, and while Mondan is completely unknown, his image is a charming, elegant and appealing rendition of a bourgeois boudoir scene, in which a servant is helping the lady of the house to dress. Rare.
