Jack Dempsey

Photograph Signed,

full-length portrait by Apeda, showing him in boxing gloves, shorts and boots. Additionally signed by over 30 others, presumably graduates of the Coast Guard physical training course. Signed in the image. On the verso is printed a list of "Important Things From Your Physical Training Course In The Coast Guard Training Station, Manhattan Beach," and wishing "Good Luck To You From / Lieutenant Commander Jack Dempsey and Staff." 7x5 inches; faint scattered soiling to verso.

[New York, 1942].

  • Notes: In 1920, Jack Dempsey had been acquitted of the charge of draft evasion, but he never felt completely free of suspicion. In 1942, after having retired from boxing, Dempsey wanted the chance to prove himself a patriot, so he applied to serve in the War and, in June of that year, was inducted into the U.S. Coast Guard Reserve as a senior lieutenant. Dempsey began duty as Director of Physical Education at the U.S. Coast Guard's Manhattan Beach Training Station in Brooklyn (present-day Kingsborough Community College). In 1944, the then Commander Dempsey was assigned public affairs duty aboard the USS Wakefield, and in the following year, he participated in the invasion of Okinawa aboard the USS Arthur Middleton.
