(JACK JOHNSON) Portrait of The First Black World Heavyweight Champion Boxer. Circa 1910s.

(JACK JOHNSON)
Portrait of The First Black World Heavyweight Champion Boxer. Circa 1910s.
Silver press print, the image measuring 10x8 1/8 inches (25.4x20.6 cm.), with a facsimile or printed signature on recto.

  • Condition: This well-known portrait of Jack Johnson, circa 1910s, shows bright constrasty tones and fine delineation of the silhouette ready to box against a white background. The print also includes a facsimile or printed signature in the lower right quadrant.

The print evidences scattered imperfections characteristic of press prints from the period.
Most visible are the diagonal hard crease in the background in the upper right quadrant, the small tear on the extreme right edge close to it, and the diagonal accretion above the arm. While apparent, these are not distracting being confined to the edge and the background.

Also, the print is ferrotyped, and evidences some of the very faint surface inconsistencies associated with that process, which are mainly visible in strong raking light, and not under typical viewing condition. In raking light, we can notice on the upper left quadrant a couple diagonal and horizontal creases (none of them resulting in emulsion loss) as well as a circular spec of tonal variation in the lower left quadrant. Additional inconsistencies along the left edge and in general around the extreme warm edges of the print (there are no margins) are also to be expected, including tiny soft creases, chips, rubs, and specs of stain.

Once again, most inconsistencies visible under typical viewing conditions are confined to the background and edges. The other consistencies are mainly visible when viewing the print under careful, strongly-lit viewing conditions, and do not detract from this mythical portrait of The First Black World Heavyweight Champion Boxer.
