E1,000/1,500 "New York Times" photographer Jack Manning (1920- ) was nominated twice for the Pulitzer Prize. From 1937-38 he participated in Aaron Siskind's Harlem project, which was undertaken by the Photo League. Manning, then a 17-year-old student atStuyvesant High School, visited the League's offices and met Siskind who said, "Hey kid, I like your stuff. Would you like to join my Harlem Document project?" Photographers would meet weekly at Siskind'sapartment in Chelsea where they were given new assignments. Eighty of Manning's photographs from this period, along with prints by other photographers associated with the Harlem Document, are in the permanent collection of the George Eastman House.
