  • Notes: "My nephew Andrew J. Donelson, who has obtained a warrant for admission to the military academy but from a regulation unknown to me at the time of his departure, cannot gain admittance until next September. This will occassion greater expense than was anticipated when he left me..."
    Jackson's nephew -- Andrew Jackson Donelson -- graduated from the military academy in 1820, served as Jackson's aide-de-camp, later as his private secretary during the Presidency, was appointed by Tyler as charge d'affaires of the United States to the Republic of Texas in 1844 and ran unsuccessfully for Vice President in 1852.
