(JACKSON, ANDREW.) Satirical depiction of the scandals in the Jackson administration.

(JACKSON, ANDREW.) Satirical depiction of the scandals in the Jackson administration. Hand-colored lithograph, 14x20 inches; some wrinkling, minor foxing, early repairs to 2 short closed tears in margins. Np, circa 1833

  • Notes: This unusual print illustrates the scandals which plagued Jackson''s second term, structured around the classic nursery rhyme "This is the House that Jack Built." It depicts the "Kitchen Cabinet" as rats, Secretary of Treasury William J. Duane as a cat, President Jackson as a dog, the Senate as a cow, Vice President Van Buren as "the man all tattered and torn who kissed the maiden all forlorn," editor Francis Blair as a priest, and the fictional patriot Major Jack Downing as a rooster. It has no caption, title, artist, or publisher''s imprint, but probably dates to not long after William Duane''s 1833 dismissal. Reilly 1833-6.
