Jacob Lawrence

1917-2000

Olympische Spiele Munchen 1972. Limited 1st edition. 1971.

Condition A. Hand-signed and numbered 89/200 by the artist in pencil, from the first edition. 12-color serigraph on thick paper.

The first edition run of the Munich Olympics posters were hand-printed by the artists from the original plate on high-quality paper, signed and limited to 200 copies per design. They were all serigraphs or lithographs, were both signed and numbered in pencil, and had the printer's name displayed under the emblem. Each of the artists was allowed to supervise and chose their own printer, resulting in 11 printing companies being represented in the series - Dietz-Offizin was used by both Lawrence and Hundertwasser.

The 2nd printing can be distinguished by lower quality paper, no hand-numbering (only signature) and were printed in editions of up to 4,000. The 3rd printing, an open edition, was produced by off-set or photogravure process on poster paper, some labeled 'Reproduktions-Plakat.'
