Riis' seminal title, and a very early use of photographic reproductions, with 43 illustrations (complete), many of which are reproductions of Riis' photographs. 8vo, original gilt-lettered blue-backed illustrated boards, minor wear, foot and head of the spine rubbed. Silver prints, the images approximately 7 3/4 x 9 7/8 inches (19.7 x 25.1 cm.), the sheets slightly larger, the first one with the "Photograph By Jacob A. Riis/ Print from original plate by Alexander Alland"  stamp, the title in pencil, and print number "99" in ink, the second one with Alland's signature in ink, the "Controlled Master Print By Alexander Alland/ From Original 1888-1898 Plate in Jacob A. Riis Collection" stamp, and the "Alexander Alland Collection" stamp with plate number "121" in ink, on verso.
