JACOBI, LOTTE (1896-1990)

Photogenic. Silver print, 8 3/4x7 3/4 inches (22.2x19.7 cm.), with Jacobi's signature and date, in pencil, on recto; on the original mount. 1946

  • Notes: In 1946 Lotte Jacobi's husband, Erich Reiss, became ill and the ensuing boredom inspired Jacobi to ask her friend and sometimes teacher, Leo Katz, to give them a lesson in the fundamentals of photography. The students created unique, cameraless photograms but Jacobi took this one step further and added motion to the light creating what Katz termed "photogenics" after a term the father of photography, Henry Fox Talbot, coined in reference to images that were "light generated."
