The Galerie des Machines ("Palais des Machines") was a pavilion designed by Joseph-Antoine Bouvar for the 1889 Exposition Universelle in Paris. At the time, "it was the largest wide-spanned iron structure," with the the largest open floor area of any building thus far. (https://www.jstor.org/stable/3105107). This same exposition, touting France's accomplishments in iron and steel, gave us the once-reviled Eiffel Tower, which loomed over the Palais des Machines. This structure was used for subsequent expositions and events over the next two decades, including the Exposition Universelle in 1900 and the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. The building was re-designed as a track for cycling competitions - the Auto-Vélodrome d'Hiver, nicknamed "La Glacière" or the Vel d'Hiv, and was inaugurated on December 20th,1903.
