(JAMAICA.) Robert Baker, His Pocket Ledger, 1789. Ledger book. Among other entries, the "Last Will and Testament"; separate pagination, in at least two hands; front cover pocket; light wear. Jamaica, 1789-1807 E1,500/2,500 Fascinating ledger kept by "merchant-executor" Robert Baker of Jamaica, with many settlements of estates and debts owed him. Most estate settlements have ref-erence to sale or rental of slaves. Quite interesting are details of the last will and testament of Sarah Wright, "A Free Mulatto Woman" and slave holder, who states: "I hereby desire that my Negro girl named Belona may be free from all manner of slavery immediately after my decease, and it is my Will and Desire that my Executors hereafter do allow her ten pounds per annum." She bequeaths other slaves to her family. Rich in information regarding 18th-century Jamaican plantations.
