JAMES A. M. WHISTLER Count Robert de Montesquiou.

JAMES A. M. WHISTLER
Count Robert de Montesquiou.

Lithograph printed in black on cream Chine appliqué, 1894. 233x112 mm; 9 1/4x4 1/2 inches, full margins. Edition of only approximately 8. Signed with the butterfly in pencil, lower left. A superb impression of this extremely scarce lithograph.

Based on a painting by Whistler of his friend, Count Robert de Montesquiou-Fezensac (1855-1921), exhibited at the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, Paris, in May 1894 and now in The Frick Collection, New York.

Whistler was so displeased with the proofs for this lithograph that he received from his printer, Thomas Way, that he asked Way to cancel the stone and to return all the proofs so he could destroy them. Evidently, he did not destroy all the proofs, given this signed impression, and Way did not return or himself destroy every impression. Spink, et al, note an additional 5 proofs (one from the canceled stone) in public collections and we have found one other impression at auction in the past 20 years. Way 137; Levy 138; Spink 85.
