JAMES A. M. WHISTLER Fanny Leyland.

JAMES A. M. WHISTLER
Fanny Leyland.

Drypoint, 1874. 197x134 mm; 7 3/4x5 1/4 inches, wide (full?) margins. Sixth state (of 6). A superb, well-inked impression of this extremely scarce drypoint with all the delicate lines distinct.

Leyland (1857-1880) was the daughter of Frederick Richards Leyland, a prominent patron of Whistler's (he commissioned Whistler's famous Peacock Room, now at the Freer Gallery of Art, Washington, DC) and the sister of Florence Leyland (see lot 67).

MacDonald notes only 12 known impressions. We have found only one other impression at auction in the past 25 years. Kennedy 108; Glasgow 135.
