JAMES A. M. WHISTLER Ross Winans.

JAMES A. M. WHISTLER
Ross Winans.

Etching and drypoint printed in black on light tan Chine collé, 1860. 253x203 mm; 10x8 inches, full margins. MacDonald's second state (of 2), after the removal of the second signature in the plate upper right. Edition of only approximately 10. Ex-collection Henry Harper (Lugt 2936, verso). A brilliant, richly-inked impression of this extremely scarce etching.

MacDonald cites only 8 other impressions (one of which is from the cancelled plate) at public institutions. We have not found another impression at auction in the past 30 years.

Winans (1850-1912) was related to Whistler by marriage, his father's sister Julia being married to Whistler's half-brother George William Whistler. Winan's father, like Whistler's, was a partner in a locomotive firm and responsible for the construction of the St. Petersburg to Moscow line. Winans lived in Baltimore most of his life and was an amateur musician, as evidenced by the viloin and bow on the table and the accordion he is holding in this portrait. Kennedy 88; Glasgow 72.
