JAMES A. M. WHISTLER Thames Police.

JAMES A. M. WHISTLER
Thames Police.

Etching and drypoint on cream laid paper, 1859. 151x221 mm; 5 7/8x8 7/8 inches, wide margins. Third state (of 3). Inscribed "Very fine early proof, Ernest Brown & Phillips" in pencil, lower right. A brilliant, richly-inked impression with all the fine lines printing clearly and with crisp, inky plate edges and warm plate tone.

The best, earliest impressions of this subject, such as this and the following lot, in both the second and third states, show all the details in the clouds. These details in the sky gradually wore away in later impressions. Kennedy 44.
