JAMES A. M. WHISTLER The Beggars.

JAMES A. M. WHISTLER
The Beggars.

Etching and drypoint printed in dark brown on cream laid paper, 1879-80. 307x211 mm; 12 1/8x8 1/4 inches. In Kennedy, an unrecorded, intermediate and likely unique state between the second and third states (of 9), with the young woman and girl standing lower right but with the butterfly shaded upper left and before the old woman and taller child lower right; according to Margaret MacDonald, Whistler Etchings Project, University of Glasgow, the first state (of 16), the old man appears in the second state which is a radical reworking of the plate, and an old woman and child replace him in the third state, one of only 2 known first state impressions. Signed with the butterfly and inscribed "imp" in pencil on the tab, lower left. From Twelve Etchings. Inscribed, "This early state is before so many alterations that it may almost be called a different etching from the published state . . . undescribed by Wedmore," in pencil, verso. A superb, richly-inked impression of this extremely scarce, early proof.

We have not found another impression of the second state or earlier at auction in the past 20 years.

According to MacDonald, the Kennedy catalogue raisonné is incorrect for this etching. This is the first state, with the young woman and girl lower right, and it is one of only 2 known impressions in the first state (the other is at the Freer Gallery of Art, Washington, DC). To be published in the forthcoming, online version of the Whistler etchings catalogue raisonné, by the Whistler Etchings Project, University of Glasgow, November 2011, http://etchings.arts.gla.ac.uk. Kennedy 194.
