JAMES A. M. WHISTLER The Mill.

JAMES A. M. WHISTLER
The Mill.

Etching and drypoint printed in dark brown, 1889. 161x214 mm; 6 3/8x8 1/2 inches. MacDonald's sixth state (of 6), with the light patches of foul-biting distinct in the blank left side of the composition. MacDonald notes only 13 impressions of this subject in public collections; this print was never published and is known only in proofs. A very good impression of this exceedingly scarce etching.

We have found only one other impression at auction in the past 30 years.

According to MacDonald, this etching dates from a trip to the Netherlands by Whistler and his wife, Beatrix, between August 24 and October 20, 1889. The subject is likely a paint mill, De Duinjager, in the Zaanstreek, the area round Zaandam, Netherlands. Kennedy 413; Glasgow 457.
