JAMES A. M. WHISTLER The Storm.

JAMES A. M. WHISTLER
The Storm.

Drypoint printed in black on warm cream laid paper, 1861. 157x285 mm; 6 1/4x11 1/4 inches, wide margins. One of only several proofs. A superb, richly-inked impression of this extremely scarce print.

According to Kennedy, "Only 4 impressions are known before cancellation of the plate."

This is one of several etchings Whistler made during sketching trips outside of London, usally along the Thames, in the early 1860s (see lots 68 and 68A). The figure seen hurrying across the composition is fellow artist Matthew Ridley Corbet (1850-1902). Kennedy 81.
