Presumably a gift to Kazin, the book has a few pencillings, probably his. fames's work on Melville marks an important point in his own spiritual development and expresses his thoughts on America and Democracy in America. Jamess, a victim of the red-baiting of the Mccarthy era was now both 'red,' and "Black,' a fatal color combination for the early 1950s.
