JAMES, HENRY. The Bostonians. 3 volumes. 8vo, publisher's blue cloth gilt, joints, tips, and spine ends worn with loss, some blistering to cloth, contemporary London bookseller's labels on front covers, slightly cocked, small white stain to cover of Volume 1; hinges cracked, scattered marginal chipping, mostly to leaves at end of volumes, some creasing; ex-collection Paul Lemperley, with his Henry James Collection bookplate on Volume 1 pastedown. London: Macmillan, 1886

  • Notes: scarce triple-decker first edition of one of james's most important novels; one of 600 sets printed. Due to Macmillan's problematic binding where the spine cloth was too wide for the boards, most sets were rendered split and damaged early on. It is therefore difficult to find sets in the original binding. While this set is currently unrestored, it is in need of attention. Edel A28.
