(JAMES II) True Copy of a Document Signed as the Duke of York, describing the boundaries of the province of New York given to him byCharles II and appointing Richard Nicolls as the colonial governor. Whitehall, 2 April 1664 [but New York, last quarter 18th century]. 3 pages, single folded folio sheet. E400/600 Curious later copy of an important document relating to the founding of New York. New Amsterdambecame New York in 1664 after a British invasion led by Nicolls. The document appointing Nicolls became increasingly important in the 18th century since it described the geography of the colony and was used in the dispute with New Jersey over the boundaries between the two.
