James Monroe

Autograph Letter Signed, as President, to "Dear Sir,"

requesting that he examine some papers relating to the John Browne Cutting case and send his conclusion to the comptroller, inviting him to visit and, in a postscript: "Inform Dr. Cutting of the step taken in his case." 1 page, 4to, with integral blank; folds.

"Oak Hill" [Aldie, VA], 10 August 1824.

  • Notes: "The enclosed papers [not present] from J.B. Cutting appearing to involve a question of law, which came into view in the decision of the accounting officers of the gov't, I informed him that I would take your opinion for their information, & communicate it to them. Will you be so kind as to examine them, & send your opinion to the comptroller with an intimation that it was done at my instance. . . ."

John Browne Cutting (ca. 1755-1831) served as a soldier during the Revolutionary War and later became an apothecary. After the War, Cutting hoped to be reimbursed for having spent his own money to free captured American sailors, but after only a portion of his claim was forthcoming, he brought suit against the U.S. government to recover the remainder. Despite having secured the support of Thomas Jefferson, Cutting never received further compensation.
