ii)Pencil on paper. Signed, J.R. Sherman, lower right. 343x934 mm; 13½x36¾ inches.

Born in Iowa and rasied in Colorado, James Russell Sherman would find his was to the Kansas City Art Institute, and eventually the Art Students League in New York City. At the League he was a student of legendary painter and muralist, Thomas Hart Benton. In 1938 Sherman completed a mural for the downtown Valentine Station Post Office, located in Loveland Colorado. This project was funded through the Treasury Section of Fine Arts, (TSFA).

  • Condition: i) The board is toned. Large loss at lower left corner and a loss at lower right corner. A stain at upper left edge in margin. 3 inch, 1 inch, and 1/2 inch tears at right edge. Damages are primarily in the margin with the image in good condition.
    ii)The sheet is a composite, with a vertical joint 7 inches from right edge. There are minor smudges and stains throughout. A vertical crease down the center. A 2 x 4 1/2 inch loss repaired at bottom center. 5 inch and 3 inch vertical tears repaired at lower left. Losses at lower left, lower right, and upper left corners. The sheet is lined with a secondary paper.
