JAN TOOROP (1858-1928) DELFTSCHE SLAOLIE. 1895. 38x25 inches. S. Lankhout & Co.
JAN TOOROP (1858-1928) DELFTSCHE SLAOLIE. 1895.
38 1/2x25 1/2 inches. S. Lankhout & Co.
Condition B+: expertly resotred lower left corner, slightly affecting image; expertly restored losses in upper right corner and lower margin, neither affecting image; minor restoration in image.
Toorop was born in Java, studied in Holland and then spent three key years in Brussels where he was a member of the circle of Les Vingts and befriended James Ensor. His unique style is a symbolic and mystic blend of the Javanese puppet influence and the most frantic Art Nouveau arabesques. This advertisement for salad oil is the first important Dutch Art Nouveau poster, and the most famous example of Toorop''s original graphic style. It was such a shock that for years, when describing Art Nouveau, the Dutch would refer to it as the "salad oil style." Le Coultre p. 34, Modern 25, Dutch 5, Word & Image p. 39, Reims 1551, Weill 149.
