(JAPAN--COSTUME.) Group of 50 kimono stencils of katagami, probably from the early Showa period, some with extremely intricate cut designs, average size about 12x16 inches (300x405 mm); scattered minor defects; some with designer's stamps. Japan, probably 1920s-30s

  • Notes: The stencils are usually made from numerous sheets of washi paper which are bound together and preserved with a persimmon extract. The designs are usually created with a knife or shaped punch. They are used for resist dyeing or katazome.
