  • Notes: Bankoku Setsuyo. Illustrated woodblock atlas and encyclopedia. 8vo format, 10½x7½ inches, original worn blue paper wrappers; small scattered stains and thumb soiling. With an interesting double-page world map that includes vignette portraits of Korean, Chinese, Ryukyu (Okinawan), Dutch, European and American peoples, as well as representations of fictional figures such as giants and Lilliputians. Other plates include maps of Kyoto and Osaka, natural history subjects, Mount Fuji, samurai armor and weapons, Daimyo naval ships, and much more. Kanpo 2 (1742).

    Small illustrated woodblock encyclopedia including double-page maps of Japan and the world. 8vo format, 6¾x4½ inches, original worn wrappers; moderate wear, one leaf repaired. Tenmei 5 (1785).

    Eidai Setsuyo Tenga Zo. Profusion of woodblock maps and prints (many double-page, approximately 10 color-printed), extensive text. Small 4to format, 10x7 inches, original sewn embossed yellow wrappers with printed paper labels on upper cover; moderate wear, silk spine caps lost; minimal thumbing and scant worm track to the earliest portion. A massive Edo-period Japanese atlas and encyclopedia including two double-page hemispheric world maps, a four-page contiguous map of Japan, a climber's map of Mt. Fuji, and detailed double-page plans of Edo, Osaka, and Kyoto. Japan, Bunkyu 4 (1863).

    Chigaku Kotohajime. 7 color-printed woodblock folding maps (World, Asia, Europe, Africa, South America, North America, and Oceania). 3 volumes. 8vo format, 7x5 inches, original stitched yellow wrappers with printed paper labels; light wear and soiling. Meiji 3 (1870).

    Ansha Chizu Higashi Hankyu (Eastern Hemisphere) and Ansha Chizu Nishi Hankyu (Western Hemisphere). Together two large color-printed woodblock pocket maps; each two sheets joined and 25¼x19 inches overall, folding into original yellow self-wrappers with printed paper title labels; excellent condition. Meiji 8 (1875).

    Iguchi, Tsunemori. Tenmon Zukai. 5 volumes, well-illustrated with woodblock charts and diagrams. 8vo format, 9x6¼ inches, original blue wrappers with silk consolidated endcaps and printed paper title-labels, light wear; light dampstain to the second volume. An exceptional set of early celestial study, the first Japanese book of its kind. Japan, Genroku 2 (1689)
