Jared French

(1905-1988)

Figure study for "Cavalrymen Crossing a River."

Ink and pencil on wove paper, circa 1939.
Initialed in ink, lower right.
11 1/2 x 4 3/4 in. (29.5 x 12.1 cm.)

  • Provenance:
    Estate of the artist, Rome.
Acquired from the above by private collector, Rome.
  • Notes:
This study is a preparatory sketch for Jared French's mural for the Richmond, Virginia Parcel Post Building. Paul Cadmus, who was also commissioned for the Parcel Post Building, had chosen Pocahontas Saving the Life of Captain John Smith for his subject. French had decided to represent the city's Civil War history, depicting Jeb Stuart's cavalry crossing the raging Chickahominy River in their mission to fight George McClelland's army. The present study, with its clothed cavalryman, may have been made after Edward Rowan, the head of the Treasury Department's Section of Painting and Sculpture, objected to French's preliminary sketch for the mural. It is now displayed at the Lewis F. Powell Jr. United States Courthouse in Richmond.
