The Royal Mail Lines came into existence in 1932, formed from the dissolved Royal Mail and Steam Packet Company. Despite her name, the company was by no means merely running mail between countries. Here, the sweep of the bay in Rio de Janeiro is depicted in soothing nocturnal shades, with the lights of the ship in the distance rivaling those on the shore.
