JAY, JOHN. Autograph Letter Signed, as Governor, to an unnamed recipient, requesting that pardons be prepared for Peter Post and John van Blaricum, who had been convicted of forgery and sentenced to life in prison. 1 page, 4x7 1/2 inches; inlaid. New York, 28 July 1797

  • Notes: "Be pleased to prepare Pardons for Peter Post, and John van Blaricum, who at a court of Oyer and Terminer held in & for this City & County in March last, were convicted of forgery; & sentenced to imprisonment for Life in the State Prison, at hard labour & in solitude and untill such State Prison be built and ready for the Reception of Prisoners that they be confined in the gaol of the City & County of N York."
    Jay (1745-1829) New York delegate to and later President of the Continental Congress, participated in the peace negotiations to end the Revolution, co-authored the Federalist Papers, became the first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, negotiated a controversial treaty with Great Britain in 1794 which almost led to war with France, served two terms as Governor of New York.
