Jay (1745-1829) American jurist and statesman, member of the Continental Congress, helped negotiate peace with Great Britain after the Revolution, U. S. Secretary of Foreign Affairs 1784-89, Chief Justice of the U. S. Supreme Court 1789-95, Governor of New York 1795-1801.
