(JAY'S TREATY.) By George Washington, President of the United States of America; A Proclamation. Whereas a Treaty of Amity, Commerce and Navigation... [caption title]. 30 pages. 8vo, disbound; some foxing, ink notation in the upper margin of the first leaf. [Philadelphia, 1796]
- Notes: the final official printing of the important treaty. Although Jay's Treaty had been negotiated in 1794, it took many months for it to achieve the advice and consent of the Senate, and then only after an additional article had been added. This printing, signed in print by Washington, includes the full text of the original treaty, a letter from Jefferson, and the additional article. A scarce item, with no copies coming to auction in several decades. See Sabin for a comprehensive listing of the unofficial printings prior to ratification and the negotiation of the additional article. Evans 31412; Sabin 96583.
