Jean Adrien Mercier

1899-1995

Cotton - Club / Théatre des Ambassadeurs. 1937.

Condition B+: repaired tears at edges; creases, abrasions and minor restoration at edges and along vertical and horizontal folds; small losses at left corner.

A colorful and energetic advertisement advertising Edmond Sayag's revue at the Theatre des Ambassadeurs, for which the Cotton-Club show was "transported in its entirety from New York, along with its 63 artists." The Cotton-Club's original location in Harlem closed in 1936, to re-open in Times Square soon after, providing the perfect opportunity for the whole crew to tour in Dublin, London and Paris when this poster was made in 1937. "The Revue set sail from New York on May 25th, 1937 showcasing musical and dance talent such as the Teddy Hill Orchestra, the Three Berry Brothers dance act, singers Rollin' Smith and Alberta Hunter, Harlem dancers Freddy and Ginger, tap dancer Bill Bailey, Whyte's Hopping Maniacs, the Tramp Band, and a chorus line of ‘25 copper coloured gals'" ( Atlantic Lindy Hopper).
63½x47¾ inches, 161¼x121¼ cm. La Technique Publicitaire, Paris.
