Jean-baptiste Greuze (attributed to) Tete de Vieillard. Black and red chalks on cream laid paper. 465 x 385mm; 18.25 x 15.25 inches. Inscribed "Etude de Greuze pour I'Accordee de Village" in pencil, verso. Crowned coat-of- arms with a fleur-de-lys and the letetrs VDL watermark. Munhall mentions another study for the head of the old man in Greuze's painting L'Accordee de Village, 1761, Louvre, Paris, which sold at Sotheby's, London, July 13, 1972, formerly in the David Weill collection (see Munhall,jean-Baptiste Greuze, Hartford, 1976, pp. 80-82, plates 31 and 34 According to Munhall, the same model was also used for Filial Piety, 1765, private collection, for which several similar drawings exist.
