JEAN-BAPTISTE LE PRINCE
(Metz 1734-1781 Saint-Denis-du-Port)
Two Women in oriental Costumes.
Pen and brown ink on cream laid paper. 207x174 mm; 8 1/4x6 7/8 inches.
Le Prince studied with François Boucher in Paris during the early 1750s and then traveled extensively throughout Russia in the late 1750s/early 1760s. When he returned to Paris he developed a new form of genre painting infused with images of the Russian countryside and daily life. The 2 country women in the current work reflect this somewhat exotic treatment of genre that Le Prince popularized among 18th century Parisian art patrons eager for a new look.
