Jean Carlu 1900-1997 La Dette. 1931 77 x 49.125 inches. H. Chachoin,Paris. Condition B+: vertical and horizontal folds. One of the posterartists along with Cassandre, Colin, and Loupot to revolutionize the French poster between the wars, Carlu was notably the only one of the four to be politically left-wing oriented and the first to use photography to design posters. Carlu was one of the founders of "l'Office de propaganda pour la paix" the Office of Propaganda for Peace; his poster "La Dette" the debt, which was the first production of the department, was for a lottery that benefited veterans with facial injuries. Definitely not a charming image, Carlu's poster nevertheless faces its subject in an honest, impacting fashion. The photograph of the destroyed face with a clear title and the information along the bottom leaves no mistake as to the poster's message. An important document, as well as the only copy known in thislarge size. ref. Carlu, - catalogue Musee de l'affiche, Paris, 1980 -no.30 reproduced.
