Between the wars Carlu worked mainly in social and cultural fields. This small poster is for Amieux, a famous brand of canned sardines, one of the leaders in their industry who were also pioneers of advertising. From the end of the 19th century they had always commissioned good artists to create their posters (including Cassiers, Gustav-Henri Jossot, Georges Fay and Eugene Ogé) and created a slogan in the form of a play on words: "Toujours à mieux " (always at the best). Carlu shows a discerning, plump, stylized gourmand looking at a can of sardines, attempting to determine of the of tin "Does it bear our motto".
