Jean Carlu

1900-1997

Fêtes de Paris. 1935.

Condition B+: extensive overpainting in margins, text and image.

In 1934, the French Ministry of Trade and Industry decided to coordinate a series of events under the name Grands Fetes de Paris to promote tourism to the capital city to fight off financial losses from the depression. Four prominent artists were chosen to help advertise the event: A.M. Cassandre, Paul Colin, Jean-Gabriel Domergue and Jean Carlu. All the posters they designed for the event were printed by the prestigious Alliance Graphique. Following the success of the project in 1934, Carlu was asked to design another poster for the event the following year. This time, the viewer is no longer at the races, but rather in an elegant outdoor theatre. Again, he depicts an elegant couple, here in slightly more stylized detail. Beneath the stars, dressed in evening wear and gloves, their body language and smiles indicate that they are thoroughly enjoying the performance.

This is the smaller format. Carlu 37.
39¼x24½ inches, 99¾x62¼ cm. Alliance Graphique, Paris.
