Jean Fautrier's early paintings, like Vase de fleurs, are typically dark and obscure recognizable forms like still lifes, landscapes, and portraits. Perhaps these impressionistic, subversive works had immensely tragic underpinnings. At the age of sixteen, Fautrier fought for the French army in World War I, but was finally discharged due to his poor health in 1921. He was able to return to his painting, and began to exhibit his work in Paris. He garnered international attention with his first solo exhibition in 1924 at Galerie Visconti, Paris. By the 1930s however, due to the economic downtown, Fautrier would be forced to leave Paris and temporarily abandon painting. He would not return to Paris until 1940 to resume his artistic career.
