JEAN PAGES (1903-2002) La Poule Grand Couperin.

JEAN PAGES (1903-2002)
La Poule Grand Couperin.

Mural study for the restaurant, Le Poulallier, 1967. Watercolor, gouache, and ink on paper. 178x572 mm; 7x22½ inches. Signed and dated in lower right image. Framed.

Le Poulailler was opened by legendary restaurant business partners, Robert Louis Meyzen and Fred Decré, owners of the celebrated New York City restaurant La Caravelle. In 1967, they opened Le Poulailler across the street from the recently opened Lincoln Center. Jean Pages designed the theatrical murals, incorporating chickens as the main theme. This study depicts a scene from the Paris Opera in which the chickens are garbed in human clothes, with the hens in jewels and the roosters in black tie.

  • Notes: Pages created murals for numerous fine dining restaurants and supper clubs including Côte Basque, the Maisonette at the St. Regis Hotel, the Rendezvous at the Plaza Hotel, Le Pavillon, La Caravelle, Le Manoir, Clos Normand, Le Mistral, and La Comedia.
